Step 5: Migrate your content

After you’ve spent some time exploring Squarespace and becoming familiar with it, as well as adding basic elements and your branding to it (such as your site title, your logo, and links to your social media accounts), it’s time to transfer your old content over to the new website and make it more user-friendly. To keep track of the revisions, just color-code each page that has been evaluated within the Excel spreadsheet. During this procedure, you should also move any SEO-relevant settings from your WordPress site, such as page names and descriptions, to your Drupal site.

This isn’t required for pages that have the same exact URL slug on both your old and new sites (for example, on WordPress and Squarespace), but it is required for any pages or links that have had their slugs modified.

As an example, if you had a non-descriptive link for one of your pages, let’s say /page-3, that should redirect to your new About page with slug /about-me, you would set out the redirect in the URL mapping tab as /page-3/about-me 301 (see example below).

In WordPress, the link to a blog is, however in Squarespace, the URL is As a result, you will need to create 301 redirects for all of the links in your blog posts. More information about URL redirection on Squarespace may be found here.

Step 8: Update your Squarespace plan to a paid membership

Prior to launching your new website, you must upgrade your Squarespace free plan to a premium Squarespace plan. View all of Squarespace’s price options. Step 9: Launch website and transfer domain

Many users have expressed concern about the difficulty of making the transition from WordPress to Squarespace. It’s something I used to believe as well, until I took the decision to change my mind. I’m thrilled to report that I was able to effortlessly convert my website over within a day and that I did not encounter any difficulties!

However, a number of people have approached me for advice on how to set up their Squarespace website or transfer from WordPress, so I decided to create a detailed tutorial! Before we get started, let’s go through some frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Step 2. Choose a template

Following your registration, you’ll be prompted to select a template for your website. As previously said, you will not be able to transfer your WordPress theme or layout into Squarespace, so select a theme that is identical to your WordPress theme. I picked theGalapagostheme because it is simple, clean, and looks quite similar to my previous WordPress site, which is why I chose it. It should be noted that there are several more themes to pick from.

Step 3. Fill in your basic information

Enter your business name and description in the Settings area, link your social media accounts, customize your blog settings, create a business email address (for example, [email protected]), and experiment with the other options. It’s not difficult; you’ll be finished in less than 10 minutes!

Step 4. Change your SEO settings.

Squarespace SEO is on par with WordPress SEO in terms of effectiveness. This is even better because you won’t have to worry about installing SEO plugins or making modifications to your website! The developers of your theme have already optimized it for search engine optimization. Go to SettingsMarketingSEO and give a brief description of your website in the box provided. There isn’t much else that needs to be changed.

Step 5. Import your WordPress content

Go to SettingsAdvancedImport/ExportImportWordpress and click on Import WordPress. You’ll need to input your URL as well as your WordPress login information before clicking on the import button. When your WordPress material is being imported, a progress bar will show, and a’success’ message will appear when the process is complete. It will take around 5-10 minutes. Simple!

Step 6. Enable your imported content

Scroll down to the Not Linked portion of the Pages section. You’ll be able to see all of your imported pages in this section. To activate them, go to each page’s settings icon and select enable from the drop-down menu. Then go through your imported pages and select the ones that will be included in your navigation menu.

Step 7. Upgrade your account

Upgrade your account as soon as your site is entirely finished. I subscribe to the Business Plan, which costs $26 per month or $18 per month if you pay in advance. This plan is my favorite since it allows me to print an infinite number of pages. If you have a large number of pages on your WordPress website, this method will most likely work for you as well.

Step 8. Transfer your existing domain to Squarespace

It’s not quite transferring, but that’s what I’m calling it. If you presently host your domain elsewhere (such as with Godaddy or Dreamhost), you must maintain that location and map your domain to your Squarespace website in order to use it. You’ll need to navigate to SettingsDomainsConnect a third-party domain in order to accomplish this. Enter your domain name, select your hosting provider from the drop-down menu, and then click Connect Domain. A new panel will appear, displaying the records you need to add to your hosting account in order for your domain to be able to communicate with Squarespace.

There is an excellent guide on how to add these records to your DNS settings on Squarespace’s website, so I won’t go into detail about how to do so. If you are not sure in your ability to complete this task, you can engage an expert to assist you.

Step 9. Wait for your domain to work

It will take 24 hours for your domain name to establish a connection to your website once you have uploaded those records to your hosting account. You may keep checking in to see how things are doing by heading to SettingsDomains on a regular basis. Your domain will have a red line next to it if it hasn’t been processed yet, an amber line if it’s halfway finished, and a green line when it has been processed successfully. The picture on the right is provided by Squarespace themselves.

Step 10. URL mapping

It will take up to 24 hours for your custom domain to redirect to your Squarespace website. However, the battle is not yet done! The URLs for WordPress posts are different from the URLs for Squarespace posts. In WordPress, the URL for your blog post would have looked something like this: In WordPress, the URL will be yourdomain.com/my-first-blog-post, but in Squarespace, it will be yourdomain.com/blog/my-first-blog-post (or something similar). Can you tell the difference? This is problematic because everyone who visits your blog entries through social media sites such as Pinterest will be directed to a 404 error page.

  • It is possible to quickly and simply redirect broken links to the right ones with this tool.
  • I’ve copied and pasted the previous URL without the www in front of it, added an arrow, copied and pasted the new URL, then put 301 at the end to make the change permanent.
  • After all, who has the time to do so?
  • You might want to do the same thing and then work on the other connections over time as well.

Your WordPress website design will not be able to be transferred over to Squarespace. It is necessary to select a Squarespace template and personalize it.
